Saxophonist Ryan Kilgore hit it on the head – the jazz scene today is one without a true, uniting face. There’s good reason for that – it ain’t easy to be the face of a musical genre! But Kilgore has the skills, the attitude and the busy schedule that could put his face on the top of Jazz music – his slogan after all is, “Helping to Change the Face of Jazz”. He’s a fourth generation player who has been on stage, the big screen, on the road and in the studio. He’s made cameos in movies such as “Drumline”, “Fighting Temptations” and Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”. He’s even had a successful run performing with Tyler Perry’s “The Marriage Counselor”. Seriously, it’s amazing where the saxophone can take you.

While Kilgore has done some amazing things, he’s more excited than ever to wrap up his debut solo album, “Conversation with Love”. He talks about the upcoming record: “This album is simply talking about all the different types of love I’ve encountered, good and bad. So, I hope to be hearing it in your car, home, and job blasting”. I imagine you’ll be seeing more Kilgore on the road soon – he’s already had some great experience. Not many musicians can say they did their first tour with a musical icon – but Ryan hit the road in Japan recently with none other than Stevie Wonder himself. So keep an eye out for Kilgore and his sax, and read on for the answers to the XXQ’s.

XXQs: Ryan Kilgore

PensEyeView.com (PEV): When you first walk out on stage, what goes through your mind?

Ryan Kilgore (RK): I sure hope they are ready to have a good time and didn’t bring any funky attitudes in with them.

PEV: Hailing from Stone Mountain, Georgia what kind of music where you listening to growing up?

RK: I was brought up heavily inside the church, so it was mostly gospel. At the age of about 7 is when I realized what music did for my heart.

PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to work?

RK: Well it depends on what I’m trying to accomplish at the moment. For example, if I want to write a love ballad or make people feel sexy, then I will create that atmosphere so it can be apart of my spirit.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live Ryan Kilgore show?

RK: Expect the unexpected! I try to take you back to some of your most favorite memories and create an atmosphere to love on who you’re with.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

RK: Wow, my first performance was at my uncle’s church and I played amazing grace. Talk about nerves, phew!

PEV: You made your cameo appearances in 20th Century Fox's Drumline, Paramount Pictures Fighting Temptations, and Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Has acting always been something you wanted to do?

RK: Not right off. After doing, Drumline I thought aww man I can do this but then I saw how much effort it took and that it would take away from my music I had to make a choice. But as of today I would like to do a lot more cameo appearances, maybe even speaking roles.

PEV: You said you received your musical inspiration from your grandfather, Ester Betterson, who was not only in love with music, but also bought you your first horn. Tell us more about your close bond with him.

RK: Well, being the first grandson was a treat. He would do everything with us basketball, football, baseball, anything we could ponder to ask him. The thing I loved the most was his practical jokes. One time he came in from work and we asked granddaddy ‘can we ride by Mcdonalds?’ He said yes, ‘get your shoes on’, so we did. We piled up in the car and rode right by Mcdonald’s. (Laughing) His response was I did what you asked me to do. .

PEV: Where do you feel you will be ten years from now?

RK: I see myself still making music, but using my music to influence other young musicians to share the gift that God gave them for good. We have a responsibility for what we put out as artists.

PEV: What’s one thing wed be surprised to hear about you?

RK: I am a die hard Atlanta Falcon Fan and nobody will ever change that! I want to have a football field in my back yard so I can live out my dreams of playing in the NFL. Also I Love to bowl, my highest score is a 298!

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you and you were determined to make it happen?

RK: (Laughs) When I left my job four years ago and told God this is it, ‘you’ve got to make this happen’. I don’t have a Plan B.

PEV: What one word best describes Ryan Kilgore?

RK: Passion.

PEV: Traveling is now a large part of your life. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

RK: It can be a crazy experience at times, but it’s all worth it. I never knew I would be able to see the whole world just from playing my saxophone. When I did my first tour it was with Stevie Wonder in Japan. First time out of the country, seeing him live and seeing that many people in an audience. Phew, like a deer in headlights (laughs).PEV: What is your take on the current R&B, Jazz music scene right now?

RK: Well, right now it doesn’t have a face. Helping to change the face of jazz is my slogan. Trying to make it visible for the youth I think is important if we want to keep it alive. We have to create a younger audience!

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your music career?

RK: Most of them have embraced it very well, some I think expected it, so they just sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from performing?

RK: Spending time with my wife and 2 daughters, at church or on the bowling lanes.

PEV: Is there one artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

RK: Wow, it’s so many. But to start off I would have to say Whitney Houston, Sade, Jill Scott, Eric Roberson, just to name a few, its a lot more. I believe in music that makes you feel something and is talking about real issues.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

RK: The name of the band is Sol Factor. It’s the band that I toured with in Tyler Perry’s The Marriage Counselor. Were working on a project now.

PEV: Assuming you have all the success in the world, win Grammys, make millions, if there was another job you would do besides entertain, what would it be, why?

RK: Probably teaching music or just working with kids a lot. When I first went to college, I didn’t have a passion for children, but now having some of my own, it developed into a strong passion to want to give back to them.

PEV: Tell us what an average day is like for you now?

RK: Wake up to knocks on the door and hearing daddy. Usually it’s taking care of the family and spending time with them. I try and get some practicing in and then of course going to bible study or choir rehearsal depending on what day it is. I honestly try to be normal at home and leave the road on the road.

PEV: So, what is next for Ryan Kilgore?

RK: Just finishing up my debut solo album, in which I’m so excited about. The name of it is called Conversation With Love . This album is simply talking about all the different types of love I’ve encountered, good and bad. So, I hope to be hearing it in your car, home, and job blasting (laughs).
