O yeaaa – you know I’m always pumped when we’re putting another Fueled by Ramen artist out there on the PEV main page. Still yet to disappoint (of course), we now feature This Providence – a rock outfit hailing from Seattle and one of MTV’s featured "Discover and Download" artists. It was back in 2006 when they released their self-titled debut with Fueled, but things have changed – evident on their latest release, “Who Are You Now?”

“I think our latest release can be a breath of fresh air to many” is what you’ll be hearing from members of This Providence – “Good, simple pop/rock songs, somewhat free of whatever current trends are dominating the scene at this point… the overall vibe of the record is unlike any records coming out lately. It's pretty hard to compare our sound to other artists out there right now, at least in my opinion.”

This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to loyal Providence listeners out there; the band has gotten really good at leaving their mark – their own brand of sound – with their latest tunes. And that’s not easy! With so much creativity on the scene and on the web, The Providence has proven that versatility is a weapon by their side – something experience from the road only makes stronger. The band was all over the road in 2009, and they got a bunch more shows coming up over the next couple of weeks. Look into the schedule and into “Who Are You Now?” Hurry – the new record is already under development. There’s more to learn below, so keep reading for all the answers to the XXQ’s.

XXQs: This Providence - guitarist Gavin Phillips

PensEyeView.com (PEV): Tell us how you first got started in the music business. Has playing music always been something you’ve always wanted to do?

Garvin Phillips (GP): Music has been something I've wanted to do since about the age of 12. I started messing around with drums, bass, eventually moved to guitar, all the while attempting to start up bands and write music. Nothing significantly clicked until me and Daniel started working together in 2003.

PEV: What kind of music were the band members into growing up? Do you remember the first band/artist you listened to that you really connected with?

GP: I think it was different for all of us. For me the first CD I bought was Green Day's “Dookie.” That record inspired much of my generation early on. The first record I heard and truly connected with was Less Than Jake's “Hello Rockview.” That album changed my life. Not that it particularly influences my writing, but it did inspire me to want to make music that hits people in that special way.

PEV: How did the band as we know it today form?

GP: In late 2003 Daniel, Myself, and a couple other dudes started playing together. By 2004 we decided on the name This Providence. Since then we've had some member changes largely due to our constant touring schedule. Once we found bassist David and our drummer Andy in 2006/2007 we finally felt we had our meant to be lineup.

PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to make music?

GP: Well seclusion helps for the creative environment for sure, but we're not always that lucky. It's been different every record. Our first, “Our Worlds Divorce,” were songs Daniel and I wrote over the course of a year or two before some demos we recorded got a record label’s attention. S/T we wrote in a rushed couple months off from touring, and then with “Who Are You Now” we took a significant amount of time off and wrote the record, starting with Dan and Myself working on material by ourselves then bringing the songs to each other and David & Andy to work them into songs as a band.

PEV: The band has recently been named one of MTV's featured "Discover and Download" artists. A huge compliment! How did this all come about and what has the response been from this attention?

GP: We started to form a good relationship with some of the staff at MTV, and our label helped push for it. It was quite the honor and it's helped to get quite a bit of attention, especially around the song "Letdown" of course.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live This Providence show?

GP: Dudes who love to play music putting on a show. No backing tracks, just rock.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance as a band. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

GP: Oh jeez. Well for one the music is nothing like what it was when we started. We've obviously become tighter musicians over the years, we were still in high school for our first performance.

PEV: What can fans expect from your recent release, "Who Are You Now?"?

GP: I think our latest release can be a breath of fresh air to many. Good, simple pop/rock songs, I feel somewhat free of whatever current trends are dominating the scene at this point. Always hard to put into words.

PEV: How is "Who Are You Now?" different from other albums out today?

GP: Another question that’s hard to put into words. I think the overall vibe of the record is unlike any records coming out lately. It's pretty hard to compare our sound to other artists out there right now, at least in my opinion.

PEV: Tell us the story behind the name This Providence?

GP: We liked the word providence a lot. Meaning destiny, or devine guidance.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you? Was there ever an “a-ha moment”?

GP: Well I was determined to make it a career from the point I picked up a guitar, it didn’t really start to manifest until This Providence started rising up in the Seattle music scene, we thought "we could do this!"

PEV: As a musician, you live a lot of your life on the road. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

GP: It's a love hate relationship for sure. We get to travel, experience so many things, play music for people. But life on the road can be very draining, and you miss everything at home, even the concept of home is pretty absent.

PEV: Do you find yourselves as a band often going back to one theme in your songwriting over another?

GP: I don't feel that’s ever been a problem for us. We're pretty eclectic minded people.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your musical career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

GP: My friends and family are pretty supportive. A lot of them have grown pretty used to me never being around but when I do see them they seem very proud of what I've accomplished.

PEV: What can we find each of the band members doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

GP: When I'm home I love to sit back and listen to my favorite records, watch movies, TV shows, whatever. Nothing very exciting or out of the ordinary generally, haha. I collect vinyl.

PEV: Is there still one artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

GP: My "idol" so to speak when it comes to songwriting/production/composition is a man named Jeff Lynne. He was the man behind Electric Light Orchestra, and produced and co-wrote many albums from Tom Petty, and George Harrison to name a couple. To hit the studio with that man in any form would be a dream.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

GP: The Bigger Lights. Those boys have raw talent. I also like that Dangerous Summer band quite a bit from what I've heard.

PEV: If music was not your goal for a career, what would you most likely be doing?

GP: No clue. I'd probably be pretty lost and confused, haha.

PEV: So, what is next for This Providence?

GP: Making a new record, hopefully it will be out in late 2010.
