Maxwell Russell is a preservationist southern rock artist – the kind of guitar slinger that’s loyal to the classic styling while bringing a modern flare to it that his fans more than appreciate. He talks about the roots of his craft: “Southern rock was started by Charlie Daniels, Lynard Skynard, Marshall Tucker Band and the Allman Brothers... those are the originators of the style know as southern rock.” The Alabama native “grew up in the Colbert County area, a region which has had its share of music greats. It is home to Muscle Shoals Sound, Fame and other famous, ground breaking studios.”
Russell has kept busy producing his music, already having released two original records with a live collection due out in the near future. The guy has put over 200 songs to track – each one a piece he can completely stand behind; “each song has a personal feeling or story that has taken a lifetime of work in preparation.”

XXQs: Maxwell Russell
PensEyeView.com (PEV): What goes through your head the minute you walk onto stage?
Maxwell Russell (MR): Thinking what song to start with, will they like my songs ,should I try the new song out on them.
PEV: Born and raised in northwest Alabama, what made you first jump into the music industry and what were you listening to when you were growing up?
MR:I have had guitars around since I was 10 or 11. Dad was always bring me something to try out... then he'd trade it off and bring another one. He was a bit of a horse trader. I loved music... the rock n roll of the day, turned out to be the British blues influenced music then I heard Johnny Winter, that was what made me want to play guitar and Hendrix, Chuck Berry, to many to mention. I got married at 19 and sold my guitar and didn't touch one while I lived there. I got into skateboarding. empty swimming pools were abundant out there. I lived there a couple of years and moved back, met some skaters in Alabama and had plans of being a pro skater. I took some nasty falls and I had picked the guitar back up and had got pretty good at it. My last fall dislocated my shoulder and i quit skating and focused playing music ,started a band and have been at it every since!!
PEV: What kind of environment do you surround yourself in to create music?
MR: I don’t... songs come when they come. I cant sit down and say, I'm gonna write a song now. I catch them as they float down the street. My creative moods come and go so I just have to be ready for it. I could be something someone will say or a feeling or a smell or a riff on my guitar that makes me write a song. I write with other people from time to time and have written some good songs but usually I do better by myself. Songs are such a personal thing ,its like telling everybody your deepest secrets while standing there naked!
PEV: What can fans expect from a live Maxwell Russell show?
MR: When I play blues... I play the blues, when I play rockabilly, I play rockabilly, country etc and I play all different styles of music… These days I play more acoustic solo than anything. It's easier to get gigs and usually pays the same... I never know what’s gonna happen myself, I don’t have a set way of doing my show. I'd say they can expect total originality. One thing for sure is you'll never hear me play Free Bird! But I will play Ballad Of Curtis Lowe. With my band its more jump style blues, Chicago driving up tempo style, some down and dirty slow blues, rockabilly, boogie even some swing . I guess all in all I play roots music traditional music all original! I only know one way to play step on the stage and floorit. Oh, and we are sharp dressers!
PEV: Tell us about your first live performance. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?
MR: My first live performance was on a local TV show with a punk band I
started named Oxygen Debt.. we lasted a couple of months. We did the Saint Jude benefit at like 6 in the morning. We did 2 songs and the TV crew loved us but the promoters wanted us outta there fast. I have since learned to play guitar and learned to be the worst musician in the band, I try to surround myself with great players...it helps a lot. A lot of water under the bridge and many, many stories to tell. Life's experiences make for good songs. I now consider myself a performing singer songwriter. I mean I write songs to play for myself, just recently got a cut on an independent artist out of Louisianian and some local up and coming bands are playing a couple of mine in their band oh and I'm co writer on a song cut by local heroes The Fiddle Worms, which is really cool. When I play out I do all original songs and throw a couple of old covers in that I like. I hate to go see a band that looks like the guy sitting next to me and sounds like what I heard on the radio.
PEV: What do you find to be the hardest part about breaking into the music scene?
MR: I've been at it for 27 years and I don't think I have figured it out yet. Now days its much easier with technological the way it is.. You can cut an album in your bathroom and be a star on line but when it comes down to it many of the successful people cant do it. I mean give them a guitar and have them sing you a song... strip it down to the bone and you'll see who the real musicians are. It's all politics its not who you know its who you blow. Guess that's why I'm still trying to find a way in. The nature of most musicians, songwriters and the like is you finish a song your either supposed to play it or your ready to write another song. For years it never crossed my mind that I'm not ever gonna get any where if the right people don’t hear me. I always thought they would find me!!! Promotion of your music is a vital step in being successful on what ever level you choose; regional or world wide.
PEV: How have you evolved your music from when you first started out?
MR:I started putting bands together as soon as i started back playing guitar, I started writing my own songs and hanging out with musicians ,bands and trying to be part of the scene . I learned by butting in and begging to jam with bands. I'd hang out at their practice rooms bring the beer or what ever and go to the bars ,help them set up and tear down wait all night long just to get up and play Johnny B Good. I learned the hard way, never had more than a few months of guitar lessons ...the school or hard knocks I think its called!! Now I have these young guys hanging out bringing beer and helping me set up tear down and asking to set in. I think I have become a better songwriter and a better guitarist. I still don’t know what I'm doing when I play its kind for like letting the spirit take over every time I play. If that don’t happen then it was a so-so night ....but when the spirit is on the move it’s great! It’s magic. Too I think I stopped trying to be somebody and be myself!
PEV: What is your take on the mainstream music scene today?
MR: It’s so plastic, cookie cutter - nothing new and original. So many trying to be just like the other one. Then there are the exceptions but you have to wade through tons of crap to find it. I'm old school blues and very seldom listen to radio. When I do its sad!
PEV: What is one thing you want people to know about southern rock?
MR: That southern rock was started by Charlie Daniels, Lynard Skynard, Marshall Tucker Band and the Allman Brothers....those are the originators of the style know as southern rock. All others from Molly Hatchet to the Drive By Truckers are followers.
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Maxwell Russell?
MR: That I wished I had stuck with piano.... I'd lay my guitar down to be able to play Hammond organ like Greg Allman. I took piano when I was 13 and my teacher was a beautiful well endowed 20 year old woman. Every time she would lean over to show me where the note was... well I never learned to play piano!
PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you and you were determined to make it happen?
MR: I never started out with a career in mind... I just wanted to play in a loud rock band and party. Later on the writing took hold and I was the asshole who wouldn't play anything but his songs.. I started working with serious musicians who wanted to do more. ...like recording and playing out where they wanted to hear something besides badly done Skynard songs.
PEV: What one word best describes you?
MR: Honest...brutally honest.
PEV: Traveling is now a large part of your life as a musician. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?
MR: I don’t travel so much.. When I do I can’t wait to get back home. I only get out a few hundred miles right now.. Fun stories...umm I'm waiting on those. The best part is getting to play with my band or play for people who enjoy good music and really want something different. For me the worst part is the traveling. I have never been very fond of it. I like being in other places I just don’t like traveling.
PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your musical career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?
MR: Well my biggest fan is my Mom and she told me the other day she never dreamed I would be doing this. My friends and family are very supportive. I play around my home town for the most part and when I do get a chance to play out of town its a treat.
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from writing and performing?
MR: Taking care of my grandson. I raised two great sons and know get to spend a lot of time with this crazy kid… it’s a joy!! I also deal in guitars do repairs buy sell and trade. I have been doing that for as long as I have been playing. I have a guitar shop and have been open for 12 years. It’s really bad now with economy the way it is and i think in the near future I will be playing music and traveling a lot more than i used to.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?
MR: I raised a monster guitarist named Kirk Bowie Russell. He has a band named An Abstract Theory. He writes all his own songs and has a vicious three-piece band. Not just because he is my son but he is just a killer musician. People tell me all the time ...you sure taught him good, or man you sure showed him how to play. Well ii wish I could take credit. He is just a natural. I literally showed him how t tune a guitar and a few chords and a blues riff or two and next thing I know he's playing the hell out of it. If I could teach people to play like this guy .Id be rich!! He is Zappa, Hendrix, Rossington, Robert Johnson all rolled it to one big spliff.
PEV: If playing/writing music was not your perfect career, what would you most likely be doing?
MR: I would be a contractor and preaching on the side!!!
PEV: If we were to walk into your practice studio/space right now, whatwould we find?
MR: Everything you need to make music and record. Not to up dated but still digital recording gear. A nice cozy room to lay back and let it happen.
PEV: So, what is next for Maxwell Russell?
MR: Gotta write another song!!
