Matt Lowell takes the 10-foot tall trophy when it comes to first performance stories – EASY. Typically, we receive answers about 3^rd grade singing performances or shows at a best friend’s birthday bash in high school… but Lowell takes it up about 2, 3, maybe 40 notches. He (and his band) sold out a show in NYC. And not just at any venue; at The Bitter End. The Bitter Freakin’ End. And how old was Matt? The guy was in 10^th grade. Seriously. They had to call the Fire Marshall when too many people showed up!

Some time has passed since 10^th grade and Matt has graduated from the Berklee College of Music, and chalked up some experience with his “First Taste” EP as well as tour stops at some fantastic venues, playing with outstanding artists including Val Emmich (PEV alum and one of my favorite features). Now his latest EP, “Second Storm” has been released; an effort that takes Lowell’s songwriting to another level. He says “I think I really focused on the songwriting on this EP. It’s a more serious sound for me and I think it’s my strongest songwriting up to this point… My style has a strong focus on the songwriting, and I try to write about topics that everyone thinks about but nobody says.”

XXQs: Matt Lowell

Pen’s Eye View (PEV): What kind of music were you into growing up? Do you remember the first band/artist you listened to that you really connected with?

Matt Lowell: I was really into everything my dad was playing on his stereo. A ton of Paul Simon and believe it or not he was really into discovering new music. He seemed to be and still is always ahead of the curve when it comes to finding new music. I think the first artist that I really connected to and said to myself, “That’s what I want to do” was Dave Matthews. He is still one of my heroes.

PEV: What kind of music where you listening to growing up? What was the first concert you attended?

ML: I grew up in the 90’s so a ton of 90’s rock in the hockey locker room, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, No Doubt, all the hits, haha. But it was always blending in with whatever my dad was playing in the house. The first concert I went to was Billy Joel at Nassau Coliseum with my grandparents.

PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to make music?

ML: I think for me the music is always around me. I am constantly thinking and letting myself absorb the life surrounding me, and then I just have to find a place alone and really iron out the big idea I have to a smaller more concise one. Sometimes one song idea turns into three new songs.

PEV: After graduating Berklee College of Music, you toured in support of your first EP in 2008 at popular venues such as BB Kings, Blender Theatre, Highline Ballroom and Irving Plaza (to name a few), playing for many great artists. What was it like to just hit the road after college? What were those days like?

ML: Those days were really like my graduate school. It’s all a learning experience, and it was great exposure and great relationships are formed on the road. Live music is what I think makes artists.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live Matt Lowell show?

ML: I try to bring a lot of energy to my shows even if it is just solo acoustic. The most important part of the show for me is to just make sure I do the songs justice. The connection to the fans happens through the song and the entertainment value of a great show. That’s what fans remember and I know that’s what I expect when I go to a show.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

ML: Well my first live show was pretty special. The first time I played a live show was in NYC at the Bitter End on Thanksgiving weekend my sophomore year of high school. I played with my high school band and we sold the place out. They had to call the fire marshal because my entire boarding school showed up. It was insane, in terms of change- I think I’ve got much better since then, well at least I hope, haha.

PEV: What can fans expect from your new album “Second Storm”?

ML: I think I really focused on the songwriting on this EP. It’s a more serious sound for me and I think it’s my strongest songwriting up to this point.

PEV: How is this work different from other albums out today?

ML: I think this EP has a taste of new age contemporary artist and has a little throwback to the 60’s roots bands.

PEV: How would you describe your sound? And what do you think it is about the your style that has made you so successful?

ML: My style has a strong focus on the songwriting, and I try to write about topics that everyone thinks about but nobody says.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about you that most fans would not know?

ML: I am an absolutely huge sports fan.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you? Was there ever an “a-ha moment”?

ML: There was. It happened after a conversation with my high school music teacher. I was really pursuing a college hockey career but music was starting to take over. Mr. Bill Pratt told me “every day when you wake up the only thing you know how to do is play music.” It was true and I thought about it, and decided that I had to attend Berklee and I had to pursue music.

PEV: As a musician, you live a lot of your life on the road. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

ML: I am just about to leave for my first straight up 22-show tour with Tony Lucca and Josh Hoge I CANT WAIT. The road is a place for yourself to think and see places you would never see. You definitely miss your own bed and get sick of hotels. There are always funny stories, and I plan to build on those, so I will wait to tell you some more when I get back.

PEV: Do you find yourself often going back to one theme in your songwriting over another?

ML: It seems I write a ton of songs about heartbreak and relationships. I know sometimes it is cliché but I really try to dig deeper into the topic and portray very specific feelings about moving on or dealing with the break up.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your music career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

ML: My family is my biggest fan. Without them this would be 100% impossible. My friends are the ones who keep me grounded and my eyes on my goals, they are constantly pushing me and supporting everything I do. Hometown shows are more of a party then anything else.

PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

ML: I love watching ESPN and every Islanders, Mets and Jets game I can. I will start to get back into playing a little pick up hockey, just afraid to hurt my arm, hahah so I go to the gym instead. Sometimes you can even find me roaming around NYC with a solid group of buddies. NYC is a good time to say the least.

PEV: Is there still one artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

ML: Absolutely! There are a couple I would say the number one person I would want to write with is Paul Simon he is a lyrical genius and has just the most amazing way with words. He is legendary. When it comes to sharing the stage I would have to say I would love to play a tune with Dave Matthews Band, I think I can play every one of them on the guitar, and to be surrounded by such an amazingly talented band would be amazing. I would love to just once sit-in with John Mayer, guy has the blues down.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

ML: Well, I consider myself up and coming! I haven’t done anything yet! BUT I have to say a lot of people haven’t heard of Joe Pug. This guy seems to be the new Dylan. Great lyrics and a great vibe.

PEV: If you weren’t playing music, what would you most likely be doing for a career?

ML: I would most likely be pursuing my hockey career.

PEV: So, what is next for Matt Lowell?

ML: After this tour with Tony Lucca and Josh Hoge I really hope to continue to develop my sound and develop my fan base. I would love to find a label to put out my full length, but I will do it on my own anyway.
