It’s more appropriate than you know that Marie (actually pronounced mar-ee-AY) Digby is our 450^th consecutive feature – the hardworking, DIY-like Digby didn’t become a success by accident, or because of the effort of a label or manager. Sure, these things play into it, but Marie wanted it more than anyone else around her, and after becoming a YouTube phenomenon with her homemade acoustic cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (over 14 million views to date), Digby was dictating her own path.

That path led to a first album, reminiscent of her acoustic style, “Unfold”, which debuted at #29 on the Billboard chart, #2 on the iTunes album chart, and #3 on Billboard's Digital chart, followed by, “Second Home”, an all-Japanese collection paying homage to her roots (Digby and her family still make the trip every year to the Land of the Rising Sun). But now, on September 15^th, Marie will release “Breathing Underwater”, showing a brand new side of the rising artist. Digby talks about the new record: “I absolutely loved “Unfold” and it was just the type of album that I wanted to make, but for the second album, I felt it was really necessary for me to grow and try something different. I thought phonically I could keep myself really open, I was hoping for a lusher production and more beats…I did not want to limit myself to just being the chick with the guitar for my whole career.”

It isn’t just the music getting a makeover with “Breathing Underwater”; Marie says “I was falling for someone and in the past, anytime I felt for someone, I would shut them down and say I am walking from this so I don’t get hurt. But during the making of Breathing Underwater, I felt like it was important to let go of some of that and let myself feel whether or not that was going to hurt me or if it was going to be the most wonderful feeling in the world, I wanted to feel all of those things.” It’s a pleasure to urge to read on for more on our 450^th feature, Marie Digby, below in the XXQ’s.

XXQs: Marie’ Digby

PEV – You made your first big breakthrough, posted your acoustic songs on YouTube in 2007, you are releasing your second English album, your third album overall, have you had any time to sit back and reflect on your success?

Marie’ Digby – That’s a really good question, I have had very little time to reflect. I did have one mini-vacation last year, my family and I went to Israel for a week, so that might have been my only time to reflect. Other than that it would be the long plane rides, back and forth from Japan to LA.

PEV – You really are traveling all around, how is that for you? Does it get old?

MD – I love traveling, I always have. I think part of the allure of being a musician is knowing that we get to travel so much and that part of my career I love and cherish so much. I don’t mind it, even if it does sort of drain me a little bit…its funny, even though you are just sitting on your butt for 10 hours, you get really tired. But I love seeing new places and learning about new cultures, playing shows in different countries, I love it.

PEV – Tell me about your new album, it is a little bit of a departure from your first one. What were some of the major influences here?

MD – I was listening to a lot of music that had beat behind it like Aaliyah and Lauryn Hill and Musiq SoulChild and for me I absolutely loved Unfold and it was just the type of album that I wanted to make, but for the second album, I felt it was really necessary for me to grow and try something different. I thought phonically I could keep myself really open, I was hoping for a lusher production and more beats.

PEV – It seems like a lot of the meaning is similar in the two albums, but some of these tracks would work in a club, is that a scene that you would like to be involved in?

MD – Yeah, I have really grown up listening to everything from rap, rock, hip hop, pop, techno, country, I really listen to it all and I did not want to limit myself to just being the chick with the guitar for my whole career. So yeah, I wanted to see if I could make a great dance track or something that people could move to.

PEV – “Avalanche” definitely had that feel to it, why did you pick that track as your first one to launch with?

MD – It’s an upbeat song but with a…the message of it is sort of a downer, its about a crummy relationship, are we going to take the time and energy to make this work or are we going to let it slip through our fingers, but at the end of the day I think there is still a bit of hope in it too, so I thought it was a good introduction to the rest of the album.

PEV – You worked closely with Brian Kennedy on producing this album. He has worked with a lot of other big pop artists, what was it like working with him?

MD – It was amazing, he has really become a dear friend through this process. He was the first person, when I was starting the album, what really strikes me…he is an incredible musician, great writer, great producer...he is one of the best piano players that I have ever met and it was really fun to collaborate with a musician of that caliber and also to become friends with him is an added bonus.

PEV – You said that you “let down some of my walls” with this new album and it was really emotional. Tell me a little bit about that, what were you going through when you made this album?

MD – I was falling for someone and in the past, anytime I felt for someone, I would shut them down and say I am walking from this so I don’t get hurt . But during the making of Breathing Underwater, I felt like it was important to let go of some of that and let myself feel whether or not that was going to hurt me or if it was going to be the most wonderful feeling in the world, I wanted to feel all of those things. And, so I did, so I think that is why it comes through in the songs.

PEV – Going back to 2007 when you first came on to the scene with the acoustic songs posted on YouTube, there was a little written about that, as to whether you were really a struggling artist at the time, whether you had already been signed or whatever the case may be, but looking back, would you have handled anything differently? Are you happy with the way things turned out in regards to how you broke onto the scene?

MD – I am grateful for all of it, I was thinking to myself, after I finished recording Unfold, if my label just had gone out and released it without all the work I did on YouTube, no one would have known about it and that album would have completely flopped and that is just my opinion. Because I had that six month period, I was going crazy at that time, thinking “How do I let people know that I have these songs, I want to reach out to the world with my music”. If not for YouTube I don’t think I would be making second album. So I am actually very grateful for how it all happened.

PEV – Your career is an amazing example of the changing landscape in promotion and in music, did you ever think that MySpace and YouTube could be this powerful?

MD – No, I didn’t. I thought that it could certainly help, but I didn’t know that it could make or break a career. I did not have much experience with MySpace but mostly on YouTube, but I have seen, not just myself, but countless other musicians who were just singing songs from their house. Whether or not they were signed or amateur or not amateur, they found great success after posting videos, I’m still to this day really impressed with what YouTube has been able to help so many musicians accomplish.

PEV – I saw some reports that you wanted to push the release of this album back until you could find a new manager that you could work with and I saw on your Twitter page this week that you just got a manager, how important is that to you?

MD – Oh, its so important, I have been without a manager now for almost a year and it was a learning experience and in some ways a warning because I had to learn to run everything and do it on my own and I had to learn as much as I could about the business and what it takes to actually release an album, not just the songs…the marketing and promotion and the label and everything, I had to sort of learn that and that is the stuff that a manager will usually take care of. At the same time, I don’t think that my album was ready to come out without a manager, without someone that could organize it and its not something I could do on my own. I finally found a manager while I was away in Asia and we’re working together and we are sticking to the release date of September 15, which is really soon, but I am relieved.

PEV – You mentioned Asia and your mother is Japanese and that seems to play a huge role in your career, your second album, Second Home, is an all-Japanese album and you just finished up a tour there, tell me about that special connection to Japan and Asia.

MD – It means a lot to me and my Mom is Japanese and she raised my sisters and me to speak Japanese and my father speaks Japanese as well…we have been going back and forth to Japan every year since I was born, so it’s a big part of my life. When I was starting out I was able to record albums in both English and Japanese, so it is something I hope to continue doing. My Japanese Grandmother is my biggest fan so I think in a lot of ways I want to be successful so she can see that and experience it as well.

PEV – A couple of quick hits for you…When did you first discover your love of music?

MD – It must have been when I was an infant because as far back as I can remember its what I love most in life. The big memory I have is when I was 3 or 4 my Mom took me to see Cats, the Broadway musical and I sat there the entire time motionless, completely mesmerized by the show and I went home trying to pick out the songs on the piano by myself, so I am sure my love for music has been there my whole life.

PEV – Some of your favorite artists of all time?

MD – Portishead who I discovered when I was 13, I’m a ‘90’s kid so I listened to Radiohead, Smasing Pumpkins, Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow and then I love Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin too even a Tribe Called Quest, a little bit of everything, Aaliyah.

PEV – You update your Twitter [page] often, you blog, update your posts frequently, do you really enjoy doing that?

MD – I do, sometimes it feels like a little bit of a chore because I just want to be lazy and go to a movie and watch TV but I think it is such an important part of who I am as an artist, to let fans know what I am up to and know where I am at musically. I enjoy it and I try to keep my content new and updated so for me, I can’t imagine doing too much more than Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and Facebook!

PEV – You were recently in Esquire in their “Funny joke from a beautiful woman feature” does that type of publicity ever bother you and do you consider yourself a sex symbol?

MD – OH NO, definitely not, that’s a definite no. But, the Esquire piece to me was very tasteful and I might swallow my words later on, but I can’t picture myself doing something like Maxim, there is nothing wrong with it, I just don’t know that it would fit me as an artist. But I think that sexy is great in my book as long as it is still classy and beautiful, at least for me. Raunchy might work for other people but I don’t know if it really fits my music.

PEV – Finally, is there anything the readers of PensEyeView would be shocked to know about you?
MD- Well, I am a kickboxer and I have been training with a UFC, MMA fighter [Majid Raees] for a couple of months now, so that might take people by surprise, but that’s my hobby, that’s what I like to do.

Her new album, Breathing Underwater comes out September 15 and a tour for the album is in the works but no official dates have been set as of yet.
