If you ever get the chance to mouse on over to the PEV “About Us” section, you’ll notice that this whole web site came together in part due to the fact a bunch of pals sat down and started throwing around ideas. Flagstaff, Arizona based LUMINARIA, isn’t so different – they’re a group of artists who came together, and realized they could do some really remarkable things. Just listen to how they describe their live performance: “Live performance is an awesome thing, it turns a small collection of individuals into this collective, this single organism. It's really cool.”

And Zoe Flippen, Ricky Williamson, Jeff Kustusch, George Malinoff, Karel Bunker and Peter Chung have come together quite elegantly on their latest 5-song EP, “Kiss Me, Kill Me.” Ricky talks about the tunes, “This is the beginning of our story. This EP is our collection of our first five songs that started out years ago… In retrospect, somehow the EP came out sounding very toned down, we're usually a lot more rock 'n roll than that sounds. But it wasn't unintentional; it was the natural progression of the process.” It’s a collection that echoes with some old roots rock n’ roll – complete with folk acoustics and some stuff that will get your body moving.

XXQs: LUMINARIA

PensEyeView.com (PEV): Having been together as LUMINARIA for quite some time, was it an instant connection for the band when you first came together? How have you evolved since your first days together?

Richard Williams (RW): Early on Jeff (guitar) and I got together to just play some covers that we enjoyed listening to, it grew out of that. Then we incorporated Karel (drums) and there was a very quick connection. Everyone in the band except for Zoe worked together so we already had to get along on some professional level. I think probably because of that relationship, it took us about a year before we were comfortable telling each other, "no, don't do that, that's terrible" or "that's a horrible idea". But we've worked through it and I feel like we've grown to where were pretty comfortable with each other during the creative process now.

PEV: Hailing from Flagstaff, Arizona, what kind of music where each of the members listening to growing up? Do you argue on different kinds of music? What was the first concert you attended?

Ricky: We all grew up in different parts of the country growing up. For me, personally, the early years were filled with a lot of music from the grunge scene. For me it meant a lot of Pearl Jam. By high school I had transitioned to listening to a lot of punk. I even had a obsessive stent with brit-pop. Now my music collection is very bi-polar. We have argued about different music styles though, we can't agree on anything at all but I think that helps us in the long run. Once we decided to kind of stop labeling ourselves so much, it just all seemed to fall into place. My first concert was Collective Soul.

PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to make music?

RW: There's no one recipe to our songwriting process. I have to be alone, it has to be quiet. Although sometimes it's more spontaneous than that. But roughly, I typically write simple three or four chord songs on my own and once I begin to work out some minor structure I take it to the remainder of the band for further arrangements.

PEV: Known for fantastic live performances, what can fans expect from a live LUMINARIA show?

RW: We're always mixing it up but It's typically a pretty laid back experience. I feel that our shows are more about music rather than pizazz, if you will. It's a fairly stripped down show about friends playing music for friends. It's very folky in that sense, no glow in the dark body paint and we typically keep our clothes on.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance as a band. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

RW: Our first live show was at a little tea house in Flagstaff called Applesauce. The place is closed now but at the time it was a cool little venue that mostly sold tea but doubled as a lot of other stuff over the years. We've changed a lot since that first show. Mostly, we've relaxed. We've learned how to play live. I don't think originally that we had any clue on what that meant - to play a song all the way through, even though you skipped a part. Live performance is an awesome thing, it turns a small collection of individuals into this collective, this single organism. It's really cool. I have a video of that show and it's hilarious to watch. The sound quality is terrible and we were all so stiff. I dont' think any of us moved an inch that entire show. But the place was packed!

PEV: What can fans expect from your first five song EP "Kiss Me, Kill Me"?

RW: A lot of heart. This is the beginning of our story. This EP is our collection of our first five songs that started out years ago. Most likely with just me and a glass of Merlot. It doesn't sound like it on the surface but it's actually pretty dark. This is the preface, our first humble offering. In retrospect, somehow the EP came out sounding very toned down, we're usually a lot more rock 'n roll than that sounds. But it wasn't unintentional, it was the natural progression of the process.

PEV: How is "Kiss Me, Kill Me" different from other albums out right now?

RW: I would have to say it's different in that it's so honest. We didn't go into it trying to make a certain sound, we just had these songs that we had written and really wanted to get recorded, to see what we could do with it. We kind of ripped away the boundaries of what it "should" or "shouldn't" sound like and just went with our gut.

PEV: How would you describe the sound of LUMINARIA? And what do you think it is about the band that has made you so successful?

RW: This is always such a hard question. Originally we were getting called alt-country and I think it's mostly due to the overabundance of Ryan Adams songs we were covering. We... well, Jeff and I at least love Ryan Adams and so we overplayed his stuff early on. But I think we've evolved, it's all just good old rock 'n roll. It's more folky. So perhaps it's an indie/folk/rock sort of sound and then my drive to have our music heard and get out there and play as many shows as possible.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about the members of LUMINARIA?

RW: Excluding myself, everyone is highly educated. Zoe and I are the only memebers that aren't engineers.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?

RW: I'm not sure Im comfortable with the idea of music becoming a career at all. Music, for me, is an obsessive hobby and I hope that never changes.

PEV: What one word best describes LUMINARIA?

RW: Awkward

PEV: As musicians, you live a lot of your life on the road. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

RW: We have yet to embark on any major tours. Most of our time on the road has been spent trying to figure out where to eat after the show!

PEV: Do you find yourself often going back to one theme in your songwriting over another?

RW: I'm a sucker for a sappy love song and random nature imagery. Themes of hurting others and being hurt myself. Can't seem to get away from that. I've noticed that several songs encompass all of the above requirements in the first verse.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your success? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

RW: My family has reacted really well, they've been super supportive. Many of our parents have made it out to see our live shows. Those are the shows with the highest pressure. Some of the best shows are home shows, they've got the highest energy. It's great to see people out there that you recognize.

PEV: What can we find the each of you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

RW: Besides the day jobs, most of us are pretty physically active. Living in northern Arizona, you have to do something to occupy your time. Lots of hiking and camping trips spending time in nature and then roaming the streets of Flagstaff..

PEV: Having played with many great acts in music is there still one artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

RW: There would be far too many to name them all, but personally I'd love to work with Ryan Adams or maybe Eddie Vedder or maybe play the triangle for Fleet Foxes as I think anything else would be inadequate.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

RW: There's a few, we just recently played a show with a honky tonk duo from Kansas City called Adam Lee & The Dead Horse Sound Co., they were pretty amazing. Locally, Nate Stone and Nolan McKelvy have some good sounds happening right now.

PEV: If you weren’t playing music, what would each of you most likely be doing for a career?

RW: We do still have our day jobs. I'd definitely be a librarian, Zoe would be a shrink and the others would Probably be engineering.

PEV: Where did the name LUMINARIA come from?

RW: The band name was Jeff's idea. It was pretty much the only name we could
All agree on. It's a Spanish word for those paper bag lanterns that you see around Halloween. I dig it i a more esoteric sense; a light from inside guiding one or designating one's path. Very deep stuff.

PEV: So, what is next for LUMINARIA?

RW: For now we're really just working on getting some more shows lined up, getting some new material down and considering the possibility of recording a full length album sometime in the near future.
