Countless bands on the scene are out there trying to make a name for themselves in the same way: the each want to be recognized for a sound all their own… or as Japan’s FACT puts it, “We want to become the pioneers of a new genre. That’s it.” Honestly, most bands that attempt birthing a new method of alternative music put a spin on punk rock that usually just sounds like… punk rock. Enter FACT. A band that defines their music as “Pop Punk / Grindcore / Breakbeat music;” a mix that’s difficult to imagine and would seemingly be just as difficult to create.

I sampled their song “A Fact of Life.” To start, I got this Hellogoodbye vibe, but with more bite… then felt a bit of a Four Year Strong sensation… eventually mixing with a sampling of Hawthorne Heights all over a wicked beat and thrashing guitars. I’ll be honest. It’s new, it’s different, and I haven’t stopped listening to the song since. And it helps that these guys – Tomohiro, Kazuki, Hiro, Eiji and Takahiro have some style (and it isn’t due to the masks) – just check out the Boom Boom Satellites Remix music video for “A Fact of Life” for some fine examples.

If you’re reading this in the states, then this may be the first you’ve ever heard of FACT as they prepare to drop their self-titled US debut on April 14th. You can get to know the band better by listening to Drummer Eiji talk about how the band approaches every tune on the record, “The biggest focus for FACT is the melody. We definitely put in a lot of effort to get the best melody line in that song. From that melody line, we change the speed, or use different medium, or loop it, etc to make it sound even more interesting. I think that's our best attribute as a band.”

FACT is currently making the rounds around the states to get the word, so without question, check their schedule. These guys have some energy that will no doubt be infectious live. They got a lot more to say below, so get into the XXQ’s.

XXQs: FACT

PensEyeView.com (PEV): Having been together as FACT for quite some time, was it an instant connection for the band when you first came together? How have you evolved since your first days together?

Kazuki (Guitar): I already knew Tomohiro growing up and when both of our bands at the time decided to call it quits, we wanted to do something together. We invited Takahiro who played with me before to write some songs. We wrote about 4 or 5 tracks together. We were all really stoked about it so we couldn't wait till we went into the studio and recorded those tracks. As soon as we heard it we knew that was "it". It was a great feeling

Hiro (Vocals): After that I joined. Eiji joined after that as the drummer... Now to come to think of it, from those early days, going on tour in US and all these things about to happen seemed like such a far away dream. But now, its not as far and we are getting closer and closer to acheiving that dream. That's something that has definitely changed since those days.

PEV: Hailing from Japan, what kind of music where each of the members listening to growing up? Do you guys argue on different kinds of music? What was the first concert you attended?

Kazuki (Guitar): I think the only band that we all listen to is Incubus. We all listen to such different music and that definitely shows through in our music I think. We never fight about it though. I think we are all equally thankful for each other's inputs and our individual taste in music.

PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to make music?

Kazuki (Guitar): First Tomohiro and I write the basic tracks... At that point there's no melody line yet. From that point, Hiro & Tomohiro comes in and write some lyrics to it. Then everyone get together and work on the melody... the person who comes up with the melody goes in the booth and we all listen to see if that makes sense or not in the song. Then repeat. But usually Hiro is the one that finishes up the melody.

PEV: Known for fantastic live performances, what can fans expect from a live FACT show?

Kazuki (Guitar): First of all, don't expect much of the masks... Or the face underneath (lol). People think we are gonna be crazy looking and weird but.... I think we are pretty normal... I think the most important thing in a live show is the flow. We try to incorporate the programming aspect of the band. For example we will have background music programmed in between songs. So one person can enjoy one song at a time as well as enjoying the show as a whole.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance as a band. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

Takahiro (Guitar): I don't remember the first show probably due to my nerves. Probably sucked too. I think we were rushing too much and the crowd felt it too. Now I think I enjoy playing and the audience are enjoying watching us play. If you play with a sour face, no one's gonna watch that and say its fun. The more fun we have the more fun the audience have right?

PEV: What can fans expect from your self-titled US debut?

Takahiro (Guitar): We definitely don't want to be grouped into a category. The album jumps from one genre to another and we love that eclectic sound. You can't jump into it thinking you are gonna hear one thing. I guess you can expect it to be unexpected.

PEV: How is this release different from other albums out right now? As well, now is it different from your past albums?

Tomohiro (Bass): First, the album is not just for the Japanese audience. It's gonna get released in US and Europe and there's definitely some pressure from that. The previous albums felt very rushed and we didn't have all the tools to make the album that we were truly happy with. This time, we were able to do prepro twice and took time to write the songs. I think we were finally able to make the album we wanted to make.

PEV: How would you describe the sound of FACT? And what do you think it is about the band that has made you so successful?

Eiji (Drums): The biggest focus for FACT is the melody. We definitely put in a lot of effort to get the best melody line in that song. From that melody line, we change the speed, or use different medium, or loop it, etc to make it sound even more interesting. I think that's our best attribute as a band.

PEV: What's one thing we'd be surprised to hear about the members of FACT?

Eiji (Drums): We are gambler by day and FACT by night. But we don't wear the mask usually. Oh but we are planning to taking a surfing trip and wear the masks together (lol)

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?

Tomohiro (Bass): I used to work a day job along with playing in a band. When I finally quit that job, instead of feeling insecure or worry, I felt relieved as I was now able to really focus on music. It felt really good.

PEV: What one word best describes FACT?

Kazuki (Guitar): Compound Music

PEV: As musicians, you live a lot of your life on the road. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

All: We aren't sure yet since we haven't toured in the states yet. We did have a fender bender when we were in Virginia for recording... Maybe that was the worst.

PEV: Do you find yourself often going back to one theme in your songwriting over another?

Takahiro(Guitar): Just looking to create new and interesting music. We want to become the pioneers of a new genre. That's it.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your success? What's it like when you get to play at your hometown?
Eiji (Drums): They are stoked! When I was a kid I used to learn traditional Japanese taiko drums from this lady in my town. She was bragging to everyone in her family how she was the one that made me a drummer.

PEV: What can we find the each of you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

Hiro(Vocals): Gambling....

Kazuki (Guitar): And surfing.

PEV: Having played with many great acts in music is there still one artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

Takahiro (Guitar): I think Incubus would be cool. Every album sounds like its constantly evolving and shows that they have had a long challenging journey as a band. I think they are awesome. And perhaps Four Year Strong too.

Hiro (Vocals): Saves the Day would be amazing as well.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

All: FC Five is an amazing band from Japan!

PEV: If you weren't playing music, what would each of you most likely be doing for a career?

Kazuki: Unsuccessful negotiator

PEV: Tell us what an average day is like for the members of FACT?

Kazuki (Guitar): Drinking and gambling... sometimes hanging out with girls... and doing nothing at home. The entire band pretty much does the same thing I think.

PEV: So, what is next for FACT?

Eiji (drums): World Tour!

Takahiro (guitar): If we get rich would love to get involved in a charity. Something that the world really needs at that time.
