Don Blanquito figured it out – he tried out DC, he went over to LA, but found the source of real inspiration – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Seriously, I’ve been doing the Baltimore/DC thing for a while but… Rio sounds like the best idea I’ve heard in a long time. But it’s more than a hot spot to Blanquito, who has found an everlasting fountain of inspiration down in South America; he says “In regards to funk in Rio, my music has evolved so much because I've understood the art better by being immersed into the funk culture. Going to baile funks, hanging with the people, living and breathing it. You pick up the art form and language flow by just being entrenched in it. I'm not the artist I was five years ago, four years ago or six months ago.”

Don has been taking bigger and more aggressive steps in his approach to the Rio scene, grabbing more attention and gaining that following the right way – “I want people to wear my shirts with pride and not be like ‘oh, this is some shirt I won or someone gave me.’ I want someone to be able to tell a personal story about how Don Blanquito impacted their life in some way. It goes further down the road.” There’s no doubt he’ll be releasing some tracks (you catch some tunes on his site right now) – music inspired by “day to day life... Things I've been through and love. Mainly Brazilian woman are my inspiration. I love them dearly along with big butts. I love big booty.”

XXQs: Don Blanquito

PensEyeView.com (PEV): What goes through your head the minute you walk onto stage?

Don Blanquito (DB): I hope mufuckas like this shit . In the first few shows I was nervous, sweating etc. But once you grab the mic and get past the first few words, lines you just jump in and get into it. In the first couple shows I'd get more comfortable half way through the show, now it is natural from the start.

PEV: Born in Washington, DC and growing up in Los Angeles, what made you first jump into the music industry and what were you listening to when you were growing up?

DB: Growing up I was stuck listening to the Beatles, Elton John and Carly Simon because that's all my mom would put on in the car on the way home from school. But who I really listened to in regards to influences in my teenage years started out from Fushnickens, Pac, DJ Quick, Snoop, Camron, UGK, Jakakiss. I had an eclectic taste, which doesn't limit my current flow.

PEV: What kind of environment do you surround yourself in to create music?

DB: All kind of things influence my music. My day to day. International settings such as Rio de Janeiro. Hood environments to nice environments. It's just day to day life that inspires my music and creativity. Things I've been through and love. Mainly Brazilian woman are my inspiration. I love them dearly along with big butts. I love big booty. I'm like Indiana Jones on the hunt for the golden ass.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live Don Blanquito show?

DB: For me to introduce the songs with reality. For example before each song I'll present them with the subject matter etc. They can also expect me to put my heart into each song. I'm usually passionate about each subject matter in the song. I've only been performing professionally for about 2 yrs and 95 percent of the shows are in Portuguese and in Brazil. I still have a lot of shows to rock in the U.S.

PEV: Tell us about your first live performance. How have you changed since that first show to where you are now?

DB: My first show was in Copacabana. I had brought my beat with me for the song “Beber Tudo”. My first funk song and I had about 20 of my boys with me in Rio and they all had on Blanquito shirts. I didn't even know if I was gonna perform, I met this chick who was at the party and she said she knew the dj and could hook me up to sing. So I was drunk and nervous as hell and at around 3 AM the dj came and told me to get ready. The dude pronounced my name wrong and everything and I stood in the same place the whole time on stage with one hand on my nuts and the other on the mic. And my whole crew knew the hook so they were singing along. I was nervous as hell. There where about 500 people there. I knocked over a lamp on stage and shit was just crazy. But that's where I lost my virginity, then things got nuts and I started performing all of the time with huge crowds etc.

PEV: What do you find to be the hardest part about breaking into the music scene?

DB: Well my music is so niche that I'm still figuring it out. In Rio to be accepted isn't easy. You need to get on the radio, but the hustle and grind of marketing as an independent artist is so hard. You have to grind and have a story to tell. I've done over a hundred shows for free in favella's sometimes where you'll see 15 year olds in the crowds with rocket launchers. Shit is nuts! For me the most important and most difficult thing is building your brand and making an impact all through a grass roots effort and path. At least that's the way I've done it and am doing it. I want people to wear my shirts with pride and not be like,"Oh, this is some shirt I won or someone gave me." I want someone to be able to tell a personal story about how Don Blanquito impacted their life in some way. It goes further down the road.

PEV: How have you evolved your music from when you first started out?

DB: Over time your flow naturally progresses. You use more techniques that you pick up by practicing and to be honest you got it or you don't. Rap isn't for everyone. I've been freestyling since I was 12-13 yrs. It's in my blood. To me freestyling is the truest form of hip hop. In regards to funk in Rio, my music has evolved so much because I've understood the art better by being immersed into the funk culture. Going to baile funks, hanging with the people, living and breathing it. You pick up the artform and language flow by just being entrenched in it… tough to explain. I'm not the artist I was 5 years ago, 4 years ago or 6 months ago. You grow naturally in any field the more you work at it and study it and experience it. It's talent, luck and experience.

PEV: Currently living in Brazil, what is the music scene like there and how have you adapted to it?

DB: The music scene there is very diverse. They have samba, pagode, hip hop, funk, axe etc. Such a diverse culture. I've become cariocizado, which means I've become like a local from Rio. That's where I came up with funk Amerioca. The cross between American and rio's "carioca" culture. Rio is unlike any other place in Brazil. Funk is what I sing in addition to hip-hop. It represents the Rio culture. Violence, sex, tropical, etc. That's why u may hear gunshots, screams, moans and frogs in a song. It's kind of like singing, yelling. It's an expression of what a carioca lives with every day through music. It's amazing, but tough to understand if you haven't been to Rio or really gotten into the culture. I'm still adapting to it today and consider myself probably one of if not the most cariocizado gringo on earth.

PEV: What are the South American fans like compared to the US?

DB: They appreciate my American flow more in Rio because Brazilian rappers have a Brazilian flow. The Brazilians like my funk too because it's different yet reality based. I don't talk about shooting people and slangin’ crack, cuz it's not my lifestyle. I talk about sex and real life. So all around people respect my music because they know it's not fictional. Just like in the U.S. some Brazilians get offended by my music because it can be raw but hey u can't please everyone.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Don Blanquito?

DB: I don't think I've ever been with a Jewish girl.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you and you were determined to make it happen?

DB: I got an MBA and was planning to move to Rio to get a job in international sales or whatever. For fun I did a song in Portuguese, "Beber Tudo". I started shopping it around and when I performed for the first time and started performing a few times, I fell in love and discovered my passion and realized that this is what I wanted to do forever!

PEV: What one word best describes you?

DB: Sincere.

PEV: Traveling is now a large part of your life as a musician. How is life on the road for you? Best and worst parts? Any fun stories?

DB: I'm not on tour too much I mainly perform in Rio. But once there was some asshole in the front row who had his middle finger up at me the whole time. I felt like kickin’ him in the face, but you have to stay focused and keep it moving. Haters are everywhere.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your musical career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

DB: Most of my family were shocked, but have grown accustomed to it. My mom can't be shocked. She's desensitized to my bullshit. My friends love it and I've definitely lost a few homegirls along the way, but they were never really real I guess. Haven't played at my hometown yet. Only at my sister's wedding, and it was dope.

PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from writing and performing?

DB: Ha-ha. I take the fifth. It's all in the videos .

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

DB: Hmmm. I like Tara Ortiz. She's got a great voice.

PEV: If playing/writing music was not your perfect career, what would you most likely be doing?

DB: Giving life tours. I like giving people real life experiences like cultural one's that they'd never be able to have on their own. Or maybe running a ho house somewhere in or Rio.

PEV: If we were to walk into your practice studio/space right now, what would we find?

DB: No studio yet... Probably, chronic, Grey Goose, condoms and some good people.

PEV: So, what is next for Don Blanquito?

DB: The world! Naw, success hopefully.
