Black Robot – it’s a badass moniker, a badass image and creates badass music. It’s like Optimus Prime… but scarier, not all that friendly and carries much sharper weaponry. And while I don’t really know what Optimus puts on his playlist, I have a feeling Black Robot is putting out some much heavier, ear-bending, nasty shit than the Autobots leader.

Enough with the Transformers babble – Cali’s Black Robot defines their music best as a “Retro-Modern Hard Rock”, and Huck Johns, Jonathan "JB" Brightman, Andy Andersson, Staffan Österlind and Possum Hill have a plethora of stage experience to bring to the table. They have a debut collection out titled “The Battle for Tokyo”, a 5-song EP with tunes from the band’s forthcoming self-titled record that will be released through their own label, Formosa Records via Red Distribution in April 2010. They talk about the five tracks: “When making this record, our goal was to create a new and authentic classic rock record. We took an organic approach to crafting the songs from live jams. We used very little modern technology; all the instruments, amplifiers, and microphones were vintage.”

We asked them what’s next, after the self-titled album drops; “The Black Robot record is going to sell Double Diamond twenty million records. We're all going to buy cars, airplanes and tigers. I'll get a chimp named Cheebo that I dress up in a tuxedo who is trained to bring me champagne. We'll develop drug and alcohol problems and be involved in Hollywood scandals. The band will break up and we'll go to rehab. The band will get back together again just for the money because we'll be broke by then from the drugs and divorces. We'll continue to play, but it will be a watered down version and we'll all secretly hate each other.” So there ya go! In the words of Lonn Friend, “Black Robot has arrived. XXQs: Black Robot

PEV: How would you describe your sound and what do you feel makes you stand out over the others in your genre?

JB: Black Robot is a Retro-Modern Hard Rock Band. When making this record, our goal was to create a new and authentic classic rock record. We took an organic approach to crafting the songs from live jams. We used very little modern technology; all the instruments, amplifiers, and microphones were vintage.

PEV: What kind of music where the members of the band into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?

JB: The guys in this band were all into the classic rock records of the seventies and eighties. From The Beatles to Iron Maiden. Yes, my first concert was Judas Priest on the British Steel tour. It was a hot summer night in July at the pier in Manhattan. I've never heard anything so loud in my life.

PEV: Calling Beverly Hills, California home, tell us your take on the music scene in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, and what was it like trying to break into it?

JB: Our post office box is in Beverly Hills. That's about all anyone can afford in BH these days. Los Angeles has produced some very important bands. It's a mecca for creative musicians. People come from all over to give it a shot and most leave with their tails between their legs. We're not here to fit in, we're here to change things. There aren't a lot of bands like us here. If a rock band hits on the radio, you can guarantee there are twenty discount versions of that band the next day playing out in L.A. It's funny.

PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a live Black Robot show?

JB: Ten thousand watts of thunder and lightning! Our guitar players will amaze you with blistering solos, drums that sound like cannons, vocals that can shatter glass. Ok, I may be exaggerating...but the band has some of the finest musicians I've ever heard. Everyone in the band is a star.

PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?

JB: We're all thinking about giving the audience a memorable night of rock and roll. We like to engage the audience and make them feel like they are part of the show. We feed off each other.

PEV: Having all been in other bands before how is playing with Black Robot different than those other works?

JB: Black Robot is the kind of band that we all equally share the same vision. Sometimes the dynamics of a band can change when one or a few of the members either have massive egos or their own agendas.

PEV: What was the underlining inspiration for your music? Where do get your best ideas for songs?

JB: Nothing beats real life experiences. This band is very collaborative. We're all very good friends and it's easy to express ourselves as a band.

PEV: Thinking back to when you first started out, do you ever look back at your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?

JB: It's always good to reflect on your experiences and take a moment to appreciate where you are today.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about the members of Black Robot?

JB: We carry guns on stage.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?

JB: When I played in Buckcherry and the check from Dreamworks cleared in my account.

PEV: Tell us about your debut release, “The Battle For Tokyo”. What can fans expect from this?

PEV: How is life on the road for you in the music world? Best and worst parts?

JB: Life on the road can be just as good or bad as life is at home. Your environment changes, but your problems always follow you. The best part is meeting new people and experiencing new places. The worst parts are when you're in a foreign country and the food all looks and tastes like fishing bait.

PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?

JB: South America might be fun.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your careers? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

JB: Some of my old friends ask me what it's like being rich and famous. I tell them I wish I knew someone rich and famous. I'd ask them!

PEV: What can we find each of you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

JB: I like to go to any Starbucks in L.A. and watch the people pretending to write screenplays and laugh at them. I also enjoy sitting in traffic and getting in to arguments with people at the (Ralphs) grocery store.

PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

JB: The Beatles. The royalties would be coming in for generations.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

JB: You should be looking out for Elvis. I heard he's still alive.

PEV: If you weren’t playing music now what do you think each of you would be doing as your career?

JB: I would be pretending to write screenplays at Starbucks in L.A.
