In Malcolm Gladwell’s New York Times best selling book “Blink”, he talks about rapid cognition, the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye. During the time I was reading “Blink” I was also flipping through my latest issue of GQ, which named David Mullen of B.D. Baggies one of the Best New Menswear Designers in America. There was Mullen, casually hanging with a group of models, showcasing the brand, I don’t know what it was but in a blink of an eye, I made up my mind – I had to contact him. Yes, there were other designers on the pages but it was something indescribable and undeniable about B.D. Baggies that made the others fade out of view. The harder I looked and more I researched I felt connected. Maybe it was the color palette of B.D. Baggies or the crisp modern look with a rare vintage quality that caught my eye but when I saw it - in a blink of an eye - I just knew.
Mullen brings a highly established pedigree to B.D. Baggies, that stems from two of the top brands in the world, Banana Republic and J.Crew, both of which Mullen spent a long time as a consultant. Aside from the obvious aesthetics of B.D. Baggies, it’s clear that Mullen’s creativity – developed overtime through intent observation from his career is what drives the brand’s success. Mullen saw what worked, saw what didn’t and most of saw what was missing. “As a consultant I was able to focus on product and didn’t have to waste my time in meetings and bureaucracy. I prefer to operate without a ton of interaction with a merchant until the product is ready and then the merchant to do his thing. B.D. Baggies offered a couple compelling things for me. The parent company WP – had a great history of distributing and retailing iconic brands as well a spirit of a small family type of company.”
The corporate experience Mullen brought to B.D. Baggies was incredibly appealing to the brand, which Mullen says, “was a blank slate.” And with a blank canvas to work with, Mullen began to craft his masterpiece – one that was years in the making. He created a line that was able to stir up images of a storied past when in reality B.D. Baggies was fairly young. “It had a little history that we could romance but didn’t have to be constrained by it – because not a lot people were even aware of the brand. We are hoping to develop B.D. Baggies into an iconic company – but by creating our own history.” Despite a long history, time has been working very well for Mullen his team. B.D. Baggies used their youth to capitalize on the gaping hole in men’s fashion – finding their niche to serve customers in what has been missing for so long.
B.D. Baggies does not mimic, nor does it want comparisons and the brand is succeeding in making their path veer the opposite direction of others that most retailers try to group B.D. Baggies with. “B.D. Baggies should be something that you didn’t have to think a lot about. It should be simple and easy, such as a great fitting woven shirt that goes with everything in your wardrobe… Hopefully gets better with age. We aspire to make product that is ageless and timeless. Not elite - but available to lots of people.”
Appealing to everyone has been key for Mullen, since that is where he draws his inspiration - not corporate America, Wall Street or the CEO-looking-to-play-it-cool vibe. That scene has been over done and repetitive. While other brands sit around large tables thinking about the quickest way to hammer out a shirt that can turn a quick buck, rather than focus on style and craftsmanship, Mullen pulls from the world around him. “Inspiration is everywhere if you’re tuned in an open to it. Movies, coffee shops, mostly people just walking down the street and very often it’s just intuition.”
I can see it now, Mullen sipping coffee on the street as millions of faces pass by, none realizing that one of today’s top designers in the world is watching them, taking in their emotions and trying to get into their minds. Mullen watches, waits, thinks and when it’s time – when inspiration approaches – he reaches out for it. “When I look at a great building, I don’t see a shirt but I see the discipline or philosophy of the architect and apply that to some of the process in designing the shirt. I’m almost embarrassed by this – because I don’t take it so seriously and I’m having trouble articulating it.”
Call it discipline, passion, skill, you name it, Mullen was made for this business and B.D. Baggies is his way of proving it. Not to be bold, not to be arrogant but to know and feel that what you are doing is your calling – that is when you know you are dealing with a true artist. Mullen says, “When I’m designing clothes I think I’m doing exactly what was intended for me to do”.
